VIC/SA Road Trip
Port Fairy to Robe
After a wonderfully long sleep last night, we got up at about 8:30 am and got to breakfast at about 9:15 am. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast while discussing the plans for the day.

After packing up our room and checking out, we headed a few minutes down the road to Griffiths Island, at the end of the Moyne River, to walk out to the lighthouse.

After our walk, we were pretty hot so we decided to drive back into town to pick up some bottles of water from the supermarket for the drive. Conveniently, there was a very nice ice-cream shop (selling Timboon ice-cream) directly across the road, so we called in there too.

Around midday, we left Port Fairy and headed further west along the coast to Cape Bridgewater to see the blowhole, which was spectacular.

From the Cape Bridgewater blowhole, we meandered back toward the beach. We stopped along the way and debated whether we’d do a walk out to see the seals but that looked like a two-hour exercise that would involve fighting off a lot of March flies so we decided to give that a miss.

Along our drive, we were shocked at the number of wind turbines we saw. They certainly don’t improve the beautiful coastal landscape.

We left the Cape Bridgewater beach around 3:00 pm and headed to Mount Gambier to see the beautiful Blue Lake.
Along the way to Mount Gambier we saw the signs to the Princess Margaret Rose Caves. These beautiful limestone caves were discovered in the 1930s. Even though the caves were out of our way, we decided that it was worth taking the detour. The caves are a little off the beaten track but the signage to get there was excellent. When we arrived, it was apparent that there was only one thing missing from the signage: the fact that they had closed four years earlier for safety upgrades! That would have been worth mentioning on a sign somewhere along the way.
After a short walk to stretch our legs, we hopped back in the car and resumed navigation to Mount Gambier.

From Mount Gambier, we got back on the road and headed to Robe. We arrived at Robe just before 6:00 pm. Our accommodation for the night was the beautiful Stony Rise Lodge. Our host, Roscoe, met us and showed us around before making us a lovely dinner, all from fresh local produce.

Tomorrow we head to Sequoia Lodge, just north of Adelaide.
